Germany has officially approved the operation of the brand-new ICE L long-distance train, marking a major milestone for Deutsche Bahn (DB) and its passengers. Built by Talgo, this innovative train is the first in DB’s high-speed fleet to offer step-free access, significantly improving convenience for travelers. Passenger services are scheduled to begin in mid-December 2025 as planned.
Measuring 256 meters in length, the ICE L consists of 17 passenger coaches, including a control car and a multi-system locomotive. DB will publicly unveil the train in Berlin on 17 Octobe*, with the first four units expected to enter service before the end of the year. Initially, the trains will operate on the Berlin–Cologne route, aligning with DB’s updated timetable in December.
One of the most groundbreaking features of the ICE L is its barrier-free boarding system. For the first time, passengers using wheelchairs, parents with prams, cyclists, and those carrying heavy luggage will be able to board directly, without the need for steps or lifts. This marks a significant step forward in accessibility across Germany’s high-speed network.
Beyond accessibility, the ICE L also introduces a **modernized passenger experience**. The interior has been redesigned with high-quality materials chosen to create a more welcoming atmosphere, while adaptive lighting will adjust automatically depending on the time of day. The train’s shorter carriages enhance the sense of space and comfort onboard.
The seating was developed after extensive trials with 1,600 participants, resulting in improvements in ergonomics, design, and overall comfort. Each seat is equipped with a large folding table and a dedicated mobile device holder, catering to the needs of modern travelers.
To further enhance connectivity, the ICE L comes with **mobile phone-permeable windows**, ensuring uninterrupted signal strength inside the train without requiring additional boosters.
Although its introduction faced delays due to supply chain challenges at Talgo and the extended approval process, the ICE L is now set to revolutionize DB’s long-distance services by combining speed, comfort, and accessibility in a single package.
